Arizona Cardinals current starting quarterback Drew Stanton has an interesting NFL tale that even includes being grateful for Tim Tebow's presence in New York a couple of years ago.
There aren't many fans, players or commentators that cite Tim Tebow's arrival at the Jets a couple of years ago as a good time for the Jets or football itself.
What ended up happening was a national champion lost his confidence and got exposed, before he went off into eternal hiding. But Drew Stanton is actually thankful Tebow turned up and brought his media circus to town.
It's one of those blessing in disguise moments that Stanton talks about when the journeyman looks back on his time with the New York Jets.
Now a starter and leading his Cardinals to a 3-0 start this season, Stanton has finally been given the trust and honesty he thought he decided back with the Jets.
Rewinding back to 2012, and Stanton was signed by Rex Ryan and the Jets to fill the back-up quarterback vacancy in New York behind Mark Sanchez.
“I signed with [them] because I thought it was a great situation, and because I had the word of Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum that I’d be the backup,” Stanton explained this week.
Rex Ryan lied
But what Stanton didn't realise at the time was that Rex Ryan and the Jets were not being totally honest with the signal caller. The next thing he knew rumors started to spread and low and behold Tim Tebow arrived at the Jets after a trade with the Denver Broncos.
“A few days later, I started hearing rumors about Tim and the Jets. I said, ‘No way.’ They just paid me a bonus and committed to me," he continued. “So, my wife and I are down in Florida the week after I sign with them. It’s her birthday. We’ve got a doctor’s appointment — we’re going to find out whether she’s pregnant with a boy or a girl. We find out it’s a boy. And I come out of the doctor’s office and my phone’s blowing up. The Jets got Tim."
Blessing in disguise
But like we mentioned earlier on in this piece, the Tim Tebow saga actually made him stronger and made him realize where he needed to go to fulfill his NFL dreams. It may be early days yet, but Stanton is excited by what his Cardinals future holds.
“I was shocked. I had their word, and then this happened. But, sitting here right now, it’s one of the best things that ever happened to me," Stanton added. "If the Jets hadn’t signed Tim, I’d never be here right now. I’d never have gotten the chance to start these two games and have this incredible experience.”
