It's no secret that the Divas division of WWE is not what it used to be. Despite the recent prominence of wrestlers such as Paige and AJ Lee, the matches and story lines don't quite compare to the days of Lita and Trish Stratus.
At the moment, England-born WWE Diva Paige has had a huge impact on this area of the industry. She managed to end AJ Lee's 295-day reign as champion as well as gaining a whole host of support through her confident personality and athletic ability.
The only Divas bout on the Night of Champions match card on Sunday night, saw Paige, AJ Lee and Nikki Bella face each other in a triple threat match for Paige's Divas Championship title.
Like several matches at WWE pay-per-view events of late, the way the bout panned out as well as the result, was predictable.
Also with several other triple threat matches, one of the wrestlers was soon out of the ring, who on this occasion was Paige, leaving AJ Lee and Nikki Bella to battle it out.
Unsurprisingly AJ dominated and one half of the Bella twins barely stood a chance. After a few exchanges and mention of the odd relationship Paige and AJ have with each other, it was a combination superplex power bomb which was the highlight of the match.
The best move of the match was however weakened by the fact viewers were able to hear the call for it through the microphones.
After AJ had attacked Nikki sufficiently, she turned to put Paige in a Black Widow hold with the Norwich-born champ eventually tapping to make AJ WWE Divas Champion once again.
The match as a whole was relatively flat and the blip regarding the power bomb only emphasises the current state of this area of the business.
The on-going feud Nikki's sister Brie had with authority member Stephanie McMahon was entertaining for some time but it is easy to think that even a brief return from a Divas legend would make all the difference.
For Lita or Trish Stratus to turn up unannounced whatever the story line or even for a one-off appearance would be ideal and would doubtlessly be the catalyst for change that the divas division needs.
Given they have both touched upon an in-ring return in interviews this year, the WWE Universe can only hope for the time being that they are given the incentive they need to make an appearance.
