Manchester United were torn apart defensively against Leicester on Sunday - but won't make a move to sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Mail.
With both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leaving over the summer it was expected that the Red Devils would move to sign a new central defender.
They were beaten to the punch by Barcelona to Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen and they snapped up both Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo who can operate there over the summer, but they still look short of quality at the back.
That certainly proved to be the case against Leicester as they were torn apart in the second half at the King Power Stadium on Sunday. Manchester United had never lost a game after going two ahead in the Premier League era but the let slip a 3-1 lead, conceding four on the bounce against their newly promoted opponents in the 5-3 defeat.
The Red Devils have been blighted by injuries at the back so far this season, with Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling all missing part of the season at some stage. Tyler Blackett was sent off late on against Leicester so will be suspended for the upcoming fixture against West Ham.
Despite that, the Daily Mail report that Van Gaal is convinced that he can get by without signing a new defender when the winter window opens, and have no target they are aiming to land as things stand.
The paper adds that although Manchester United officials admit their is an issue at centre-back as things stand, none of the defenders that will be available in January are of sufficient quality to consider making a move for. They've been heavily linked with Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund but he will not move mid-way through the season. Ron Vlaar has also been mooted as an option.
Various reports have suggested that Manchester United may well instead target a new midfielder, having failed to land their top target Arturo Vidal, before the summer window shut.
The Chilean remains a target according to reports but it seems that Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman is at the top of Van Gaal's transfer hitlist. The Dutchman is currently out of action with a knee injury until November, but the Manchester United manager is reportedly keen on making a move for his countryman when he has proved his fitness.
Roma have publicly denied that Strootman is for sale, while various reports have suggested that he could set the Red Devils back up to £60 million.
