Manchester City emerged triumphant from a derby encounter with Manchester United as a wonderful effort from Manu Garcia ensured the Blues were able to claim bragging rights, albeit at under-18 level.

Delightful effort

Garcia’s was the only goal of the game, with the young Spaniard stroking home a delicious effort from the edge of the Manchester United penalty area beyond the left hand of Dean Henderson and into the top corner.

This game actually took place last week, but Manchester City have only just released footage of Garcia’s strike onto their official YouTube account, and it was certainly something special from the teenager.

Victory enabled Manchester City to maintain a perfect start to the North Division campaign, while this game was the final one to be played between the two sides at Platt Lane before City move to a new complex next season.

City will be hosts when the senior teams meet for the first time during this campaign, with the Etihad Stadium the venue for the clash with Manchester United on the first Sunday in November, still over seven weeks away.

First-team

Given the injury problems currently encountered by United manager Louis van Gaal, it may be that one or two of these players to have contested the mini-Manchester derby may soon be training with his Old Trafford first-team.

United are particularly short at the back at the moment, and will be potentially be without four defenders for the visit of West Ham on Saturday. Phil Jones and Jonny Evans are both injured, while Tyler Blackett is suspended and Chris Smalling may not be fit in time.

This has resulted in suggestions that Van Gaal will consider bringing in relative unknown Paddy McNair from the club’s under-21 side in order to provide cover for the weekend, such is his desperation for numbers at the back.

Van Gaal’s worries serve to highlight his failures in the transfer market with United having spent £150 million but failed to compensate for the departures of both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
