Rory McIlroy receives good luck message from Wayne Rooney

Manchester United star Wayne Rooney sent his support to Team Europe's top name Rory Mcllroy as with the Ryder Cup starting in less than 15 hours.

The world number one golfer and his teammates will renew their rivalry with the USA on Friday morning, and the Northern Irishman has been given an ideal last minute boost after receiving a little message from one of his footballing heroes.

Rooney posted on his official Facebook page: "Good luck to Rory McIlroy and the Ryder Cup Team Europe tomorrow!"

Rooney and McIlroy were first introduced through shared sponsor Nike, shooting an advert together, and have since been able to build up a strong friendship.

Mcllroy, 24, is always excited to travel to Old Trafford to support the Red Devils when he gets the opportunity, offering his support to the new Manchester United captain with whom he is in frequent contact.

Ryder Cup 2014

It will be a huge battle between the two continents in Scotland with the of showcasing some impressive golfing skills at Gleneagles, which will celebrate its 90th anniversary by hosting the 40th edition of the Ryder Cup.

Both teams have two different targets this year with Team USA looking for redemption and the Europeans, the hosts, working hard to maintain their dominance.

Team Europe have won the tournament, which takes place every two years, on seven occasions throughout the past 20 years.

Running out once again victorious on September 28, 2014 would mean that the European troupe have accomplished an hat-trick, with the Americans' last win coming six years ago.

For Mcllroy it would also be third triumph having played twice in the competition and won it on two occasions with Team Europe in 2010 and 2012.

The splendid Gleneagles golf course will welcome over 45,000 people on each day of the tournament and this year, but it still remains one of the great sporting spectacles on TV.
