Former Arsenal centre-half Martin Keown has insisted that Manchester United should take a look at Real Madrid star Raphael Varane as they go in search of improving their back-line.
Keown, who was answering questions for the Daily Mail, believes Varane is the best young defender in the game, but has admitted that the Red Devils could do with adding experience to their defence after a poor start to the campaign.
Manchester United, of course, have only recently landed Angel di Maria from the Spanish giants, but Keown thinks they should head to Spain again in the next transfer window.
The former Gunner said: "It will be difficult for them to sign a really top player. I’m a big fan of Raphael Varane at Real Madrid and would probably have a look at him.
"He is the best young centre back out there, but still has room to improve and perhaps another young defender is not what United need.
Keown has, however, insisted that Manchester United should target Pepe or Sergio Ramos if Varane forces his way into Carlo Ancelotti's side.
He continued by saying: "He would be difficult to prise out of Madrid, but if he’s not playing because of the form of Pepe and Sergio Ramos, then maybe he might want to play.
"On the other hand, if he is the future for Madrid then perhaps Pepe or Ramos could be convinced to move on. Ramos in particular would be an excellent addition."
Manchester United fans will certainly be hoping that the club improve in their back-line after a disastrous start to the campaign. The Red Devils have conceded goals for fun so far this term and have secured just five points from their opening five league fixtures.
Last month, in the Capital One Cup, United were humiliated by League One outfit MK Dons as they shipped four goals, while Premier League new-boys Leicester City hit five past them last weekend in another shocking defeat for the club.
And, things aren't going to get any easier for Van Gaal's side as they play host to West Ham United this weekend. The Red Devils are without four first-team centre-halfs for the clash with the Hammers.
Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are ruled out of the fixture through injury, while youngster Tyler Blackett is suspended after picking up a red card against Leicester City last weekend.
It's expected, then, that United will start Argentine international Marcos Rojo in the centre of defence. The likes of Daley Blind, Tom Thorpe and Paddy McNair appear to be in contention to partner the Argentine, with England international Luke Shaw moving into the left-back role.
