Gibbs has cemented his place in the Arsenal team but has failed to establish himself at international level - a position that Wenger believes is there for the taking if the 25-year-old can overcome his injury problems.

The £50,000-a-week full-back possesses many similarities to Cole when he first came through the youth ranks in north London, having been transformed from a winger to a midfielder, and finally a defender by the French tactician.

Gibbs will be pleased if he enjoys half as much success as his old mentor has over the years at club level, and he's showing no signs of slowing down yet in his new challenge at AS Roma.
