Before the start of the season Chelsea were the bookies favourites to win the Barclays Premier League.
They had recently employed one of the best managers in the world in Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea, as they normally do, had also strengthened there already strong team, but they looked like they have already lost their grip on their almost certain Premier League victory.
In my opinion this is a result of one factor: Their lack of a goal scorer.
Mourinho had four top class strikers to choose from after the signing of Samuel Eto’o from Anzhi Makhachkala in the summer and the recent return of Romelu Lukaku from his successful loan spell at West Bromwich Albion along with the two strikers that were already present, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba.
Mourinho’s Chelsea had their first major challenge in the form of the Super Cup final against the formidable Bayern Munich, which they lost on penalties with Lukaku missing the fatal spot kick.
Mourinho decided to loan Romelu Lukaku to Everton on transfer deadline day. Since Lukaku’s departure to Everton, Chelsea have struggled to convert their chances as Torres, Eto’o and Ba have yet to register a single goal in the Premier League.
In comparison Lukaku has hit the back of the net four times already this season. This shows the quality that Lukaku possess.
There is no doubt that Chelsea have enough flair and creativity within their ranks to open up numerous numbers of defences in the Premier League and in Europe, with the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Willian and André Schürrle and so on.
These players suggest that Chelsea would not struggle to come by goals but this isn’t the case, since the opening day of the season Chelsea have been grinding out results against teams they should be thrashing.
There is no doubt that that Eto’o once was the best striker in the world along with Fernando Torres but they're both past their prime and Ba has struggled to settle at Chelsea since his transfer from Newcastle in January.
Chelsea need a young enthusiastic goal scorer, which they had in Lukaku.
