Kevin de Bruyne takes flying boot to the crotch

Former Chelsea winger Kevin de Bruyne fell victim to a particularly painful act of ungentlemanly conduct when he was caught square in the crotch by a flying boot from an opponent in the Bundesliga this weekend.

The VfL Wolfsburg star was minding his own business preparing to take a throw-in when FC Augsburg midfielder Tobias Werner flung his leg out from only a few feet away, and in doing so launched his footwear in the direction of De Bruyne's crown jewels.

It's not exactly clear whether Werner meant to strike the Belgium international right in the bread basket, but he was given the benefit of doubt from the referee who chose only to brandish a yellow card.

Makes your eyes water...

Television replays suggest that the 29-year-old was in fact imitating an earlier kick to the linesman when his boot conspicuously soared into his opponent's groin.

Either way, Werner was certainly helped out by De Bruyne's lack of reaction to an incident that plenty of other prima donnas would've made the most of an opportunity to roll around the floor clutching their private parts in an attempt to get the antagonist sent off.

With the game still tentatively poised at 0-0, De Bruyne should probably be commended for his honesty (and bravery), even though he did have a little moan in the ear of the assistant referee in the aftermath of the 'tackle'.

Professional approach

Despite both sides keeping all 11 players on the pitch it was Dieter Hecking's side that secured all three points at the Volkswagen Arena thanks to a second-half strike by Brazilian defender Naldo, assisted by Sebastian Jung.

The victory lifts Wolfsburg above Augsburg to seventh place in the Bundesliga table with 11 points from their opening seven games in 2014/15.
