Arsenal could make a defender signing in the form of Aymeric Laporte once the January transfer window swings open, according to the Daily Express.

Laporte to Arsenal

The 20-year-old French U21 international is heralded one of the best young centre backs in Europe and could be huge boost for Arsenal's defensive frailties.

Arsenal scouts are believed to have been following his progress for the recent months and sources suggest that the 20-year-old could well be on his way to the Emirates.

Rejected offer

Arsenal were said to have had an offer knocked back for him in the summer, but the source suggests that the possibility of the deal going through in January is strong, and Arsene Wenger is more than willing to activate Laporte's £34million release clause

On recent evidence, Wenger is quite keen on snapping up players of French origin and Laporte could be an irreplaceable signing, taking into account his credentials and the rave reviews he's been the subject of.

The youngster has made a name for himself in Europe thanks to his showings in La Liga, and has previously been linked with moves to Old Trafford and White Hart Lane. His heading abilities, tough tackling tendency and positional sense makes him a tailor made customer for the Premier League.
