Wigan prop Ben Flower has become the first player in Super League history to be sent off in a Grand Final for two brutal punches.

Flower hammered St Helens’ stand-off Lance Hohaia after just two minutes and was given his marching orders. Just moments earlier Flower had squandered the chance to claim an early try when he coughed up the ball with the line beckoning.

Shortly after, he lost his cool and punched Hohaia with a shocking hit to the face. As Hohaia hit the floor, Flower jumped on top of him and landed another horrible blow to his opponent’s head.

The whole thing was caught on camera and beamed to a live TV audience. Referee Phil Bentham was left with no other option but to sent Flower off after just 120 seconds. In the process the Wigan prop and Wales international became the first person to be sent off in a Grand Final.

The Daily Mail reports that Hohaia remained on the touchline for the rest of the first half after the incident and is believed to have a broken nose.
