The agent of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jorge Mendes, has confirmed that the Real Madrid star's release clause stands at a staggering €1 billion.
Not only that, but the controversial figure insists that Ronaldo is worth every penny of that release clause, claiming he is history's greatest-ever athlete.
Despite approaching the dreaded age of 30, Ronaldo only seems to be getting better. The Portugal international has scored 19 goals in 11 games so far this season and is heavy favourite to retain his Ballon d'Or prize.
Mendes, who hit headlines earlier this week after confirming Ronaldo is likely to retire at the Bernabeu and could play on until he is 40, believes the two-time Ballon d'Or winner will go down in history as the greatest athlete ever.
"In addition to being the best footballer in history, he is the greatest athlete of all time," he told AS. "You cannot compare him with anyone.
"He is the best player in the biggest sport in the world, in which there is more competition than in any other. For that reason, he is the best sportsman in the world."
Having cost Real Madrid a staggering £80 million to sign him from Manchester United, Florentino Perez has managed to label Ronaldo virtually priceless in his latest contract. Not only that, but Mendes has no doubt that he is worth it.
Asked how much it would cost to sign Ronaldo, Mendes said: "The price that is stated in his release clause – €1bn."
That is certainly bad news for Louis van Gaal, who seemed intent on bringing the Manchester United legend back to Old Trafford.
