Real Madrid’s big money move for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been afforded a huge boost, as president Florentino Perez is firmly backing the move.
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo the mega-rich chief of the Santiago Bernabeu wants De Gea to replace Iker Casillas in between the sticks, with the latter having endured a torrid loss of confidence which has resulted in a meteoric decline in his reputation.
It’s said that Perez has given his consent for super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has De Gea as well as Cristiano Ronaldo, as a client, to do his best to arrange negotiations, with the Portuguese tasked with convincing United to sell one of their most precious assets.
De Gea at United
Despite coming under heavy criticism when he first arrived at Old Trafford De Gea has grown into his role as Edwin van der Sar’s successor, and now ranks amongst the most senior members of Louis van Gaal’s squad. Last season’s United award ceremony saw the ‘keeper recognised as the Player of the Year, appearing to finally cement him as a fan favourite.
Yet strong speculation remains suggesting that he will be coaxed into a move back to Spain in the form of Real, who will be under pressure to dip into the market for a stopper so long as Casillas’s form remains as erratic as it has been since the World Cup.
As is usually the case with Perez it’s assumed that he will throw money at his problems in order to simply find a way round them through the introduction of one of Europe’s top talents.
De Gea may be one of Van Gaal’s most influential dressing room figures but his contract is up in 2016, which means that United could risk losing him for nothing if he hasn’t agreed a new deal by next summer and they reject Madrid’s advances.
It’s a scenario the Red Devils will likely be keen to avoid, with Van Gaal certainly aware of Perez’s track record when it comes to acquiring players who wouldn’t otherwise be available.
Los Blancos’ yearly ventures into the summer transfer market, which usually end up with them buying the most in-form players in the world, have become the stuff of footballing legend, and De Gea seems to be the next name on the hit-list.
