WWE superstar wrestler John Cena is facing a lot of criticism these days from the WWE Universe. Fans believe that the John Cena character has become stale, but what exactly could Vince McMahon and co do about it?
For starters, they could actually turn John Cena heel which is something that the majority of the WWE fans want. But turning Cena heel is not as easy as some might think, according to wrestling booker Eric Bischoff.
Eric Bischoff was one of the men responsible for Hulk Hogan's wrestling heel turn, which was seen as controversial in some quarters. And Bischoff believes that a potential Cena heel turn would be equally controversial. But rather than frustrate WWE fans, the decision to turn Cena heel is dangerous for WWE from a financial perspective, according to Bischoff.
"You’ve got to put everything in the proper context, there were no nWo shirts for sale before I turned Hulk Hogan heel. One disadvantage I had when I launched Nitro, compared to WWE, is that they had very sophisticated licensing and merchandise, WCW didn’t have any," Bischoff told Alternative Nation.
"This is one of the reasons I had to guarantee contracts, because if I didn’t guarantee how much money somebody was going to make, there was no chance in hell they were going to make enough to live off of if it was in part based on licensing and merchandising that didn’t exist. It is what it is, and was what it was, based on what I inherited, when I inherited it. But it was also an advantage, because I didn’t have to risk the same type of financial impact that for example WWE might be analyzing, ‘Okay, what happens if John Cena merchandise goes away?’ I didn’t have that challenge, because I wasn’t making any anyways. I had nowhere to go but up."
It could happen
When it comes down to it, John Cena is arguably the biggest wrestler in the WWE. But regardless of his popularity, his character has become stale.
WWE fans have been imploring Cena to turn heel for years, and two months ago he teased those fans after taking to Twitter. On his official account, the superstar wrestler posted a message on the #lifewouldbebetterif that was trending at the time.
"Ok interweb, have fun with this one... #lifewouldbebetterif I turned heel. @twitter feed crash in 3...2..."
Ultimately, Cena's comments were funny because they are true. While he was only having fun with his fans, it is not unthinkable to see Cena as a heel. And it just might be the thing that spices up the WWE after a few torrid months.
