No one predicted that the Dallas Cowboys would be 4-1 heading in to their weekend match up against Super Bowl champs the Seattle Seahawks. Even fewer predicted that the famous franchise would come away from CenturyLink Field with a win.
Both those statements have of course become fact over recent weeks, leaving one television personality red-faced in the process.
Famously outspoken TV co-host Stephen A. Smith has been front and center amongst those playing down Dallas' hopes all season long and he was forced to eat a little bit of humble pie this week on the back of a 'bet' made with fellow host Skip Bayless.
In what seemed like a risk free statement prior to the Cowboys' trip to Seattle, Smith stated live on air that he would wear a Tony Romo number nine jersey and a Dallas Cowboys hat for this week's 'First Take' show should America's Team manage to upset the odds and come away with a win.
"The fact of the matter is the Dallas Cowboys are going to lose this game on Sunday,'' Smith explained last week.
"They will not win. I’m guaranteeing you they will not win or I will come up in here on Monday, I will have on a Tony Romo jersey or I will have on a Dallas Cowboys baseball cap. Matter of fact, I’ll do you one better Skip. Here’s the deal. I’ll be back in Bristol for my birthday. I’ll wait until Tuesday and put on the Cowboy outfit on my birthday. That’s how sure I am that I’m not going to have to do it. Because that would absolutely ruin my birthday.”
And after Sunday's shock win for Dallas, Tuesday marked Smith's appearance decked almost head to toe in Cowboys gear.
Smith, a man who has made it his mission to criticise the Cowboys in the past, took the whole thing pretty well in fairness even with the ever-goading Bayless in his ear.
With Jason Garrett and his team continuing to defy the odds this season we would advice Smith against any more outlandish bets - at least until the Cowboys' record looks a little less impressive.
