Cristiano Ronaldo is no stranger to reaching milestones on the pitch, scoring virtually countless goals for Real Madrid, but it was his Facebook page that hit the headlines with a new record yesterday.
The two-time Ballon d'Or winner became the first footballer to surpass 100 million Likes on Facebook and only the second human after Shakira reached the milestone earlier this year.
Ronaldo is untouchable when it comes to Facebook fandom. The forward is head and shoulders above his arch-rival Leo Messi. The Barcelona star has to get by with a paltry 74 million Likes.
Messi, who has won the Ballon d'Or four times, has little chance of catching Ronaldo either, as the 29-year-old is believed to be averaging around 500 new Likes every minute.
His incredible form, which has seen him score 17 goals in just ten games for Real Madrid this season, has helped him leapfrog both Rihanna and Eminem in the race to become the second person to reach the milestone.
To put it into perspective Zlatan Ibrahimovic is close to hitting the 20 million mark and David Beckham, who has played for several of the biggest clubs in the world is approaching 50 million.
With over 100 million people now following his movements, Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes will have a much easier time justifying the claim that his client is worth €1 billion. The agent insisted that any club hoping to sign Ronaldo will have to meet the full amount of his release clause.
Asked how much it would cost to sign Ronaldo, Mendes said: "The price that is stated in his release clause – €1bn."
Upon reaching the milestone, Ronaldo addressed his mass following.
"Thank you everyone, finally I achieve 100 million fans on Facebook," the Portuguese star said in the video.
"I'm proud to be one of the world's most-liked public figures on Facebook."
