On Tuesday, the WWE announced that longtime ring announcer Justin Roberts had been released from the company immediately after this week's episode of Monday Night Raw.
No reasons were given for the 12-year veteran's release, as the company just said in a statement that they had taken the decision not to renew Roberts contract and that he was no longer with the company effective immediately.
Well now we may know exactly why Roberts was let go so abruptly...
According to wrestling fans on social media that attended the Raw live show in Atlanta, GA, Roberts was seen yelling at WWE TV commentator Michael Cole during the match between Randy Orton and Dolph Ziggler.
It has also been noted that Roberts was caught flipping off Cole, a man who is near universally hated in the WWE Universe by fans but loved by Vince McMahon and company.
Since his release from the company Roberts had been quiet across all forms of social media and had not made a statement about the decision, well until now. On his personal Instagram page, Roberts has created a 'Final Announcement' post that serves as basically a thank you to everyone he worked with at the WWE, even including Kevin Dunn who told Roberts he'd been let go.
Unsurprisingly, Michael Cole is not mentioned in the post. Here's a small excerpt from the lengthy piece:
“It might sound cliche, but I am truly overwhelmed & humbled by the messages I’ve received. As a kid who grew up loving & living for professional wrestling, I was able to chase, catch & live an impossible dream....
To Vince McMahon, Kevin Dunn & The Authority who gave me this incredible opportunity, I’ve got two words for ya: Thank You. The journey has been incredible & almost unbelievable. This is the opportunity I’ve been waiting for to pen the final chapter of my memoirs.”
Roberts will be appearing on this Friday's episode of the Talk is Jericho podcast with Y2J and hopefully we will find out for sure what went down on Monday night.
