Manchester United appear to have dodged a bullet in the form of a transfer failure from last year, as Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara will spend another lengthy spell on the sidelines thanks to injury, it has been confirmed.
The Red Devils were said to be desperate to make the young Spanish midfielder a flagship signing of their new era under David Moyes, but ultimately lost out to Bayern, with Pep Guardiola convincing him instead to move to Germany.
And, despite initially looking as though he would be central to Guardiola’s plans in Munich, Thiago has suffered from continual injuries which have conspired to hamper his game-time and potentially stunt his development.
The latest complaint, as reported by Sky Sports, will see the promising 23-year-old out for another lengthy absence, with Bayern’s official Twitter account confirming he had “suffered a ligament tear in training.”
The player himself then offered his opinion, which was one rife with frustration: "What can I say?
"Of course, I am at the moment profoundly disappointed and upset. Why always me? But I will not give up. I will fight again. I'm going to get close again. And I will celebrate my comeback at Bayern."
Having been prevented from appearing in any of his club’s games so far this season, virtue of surgery on an injury which saw him ruled out of the World Cup in Brazil this summer, it was thought that Thiago was close to making a return, with Guardiola keen to implement him in his plans.
Now though both he and Bayern will be cursing their luck, and United will duly be breathing a sigh of relief.
Moyes’s campaign may have quickly gone to the dogs and Louis van Gaal’s reign ushered in to rectify things, but United fans will be all too aware of how close they came to compiling their misery by splashing out to land Thiago last summer.
If the former Premier League champions had been allowed to sign the injury-prone star then they definitely would have, with many seeing Thiago as having the potential to become world-class.
