Frank Lampard’s unexpected loan move to Manchester City has been fully justified after he was voted player of the month for the Premier League champions, which perhaps serves as evidence that Chelsea ought to have retained his services.
Lampard left Chelsea in the summer following 13 years of glorious service and agreed to sign for New York City FC, although the fact that they don’t enter MLS until placed the veteran midfielder in a state of limbo.
It would have made sense for Lampard to be offered short-term contract by Chelsea in order to provide Jose Mourinho with some experience and cover in midfield, but it was Manchester City, using their association with NYCFC, who recruited him on a temporary deal.
When Chelsea visited the Etihad Stadium this season it just had to be that Lampard would be the player to affect proceedings, and the 36-year-old scored the equalising goal. It was a typically Lampard finish, and one that ensured City are the only team to have taken points from Chelsea this term.
While it may not have left Mourinho scratching his head and pondering just why he did not offer Lampard a new deal, it did serve as evidence that the former England international can still contribute at the top level.
But there still remain reasons that Lampard should have been afforded the opportunity to finish his playing career at Stamford Bridge, and here are just some of them…
