Arsenal stars Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker used the recent international break to try and persuade Sami Khedira to join them in north London, reports the Evening Standard.
Real Madrid are preparing to cash in on the defensive midfielder in the January transfer window with the alternative of losing him for free in the summer an unattractive proposition. However, Chelsea were reportedly preparing to offer Khedira a pre-contract as soon as his contract enters that six-month period.
Khedira has strong connections with both Chelsea and Arsenal. Along with Mertesacker and Ozil, Lukas Podolski makes up a strong German contingent. Joining up with his World Cup winning team-mate in north London has tempted Khedira and the 27-year-old has stayed in close contact after his summer move to the Emirates fell through.
However, with Mourinho in charge at Stamford Bridge, a move to Chelsea is equally tempting for Khedira. The Special One can take credit for helping Khedira reach his current level having showed faith in him during his three-years in charge of Real Madrid.
The pair are believed to share a close relationship and Khedira is tempted to reunite if given the chance. Mourinho was hoping to take advantage with an early pre-contract offer, but Arsenal and their growing links to the German national squad are a continued thorn in his side.
Mertesacker and Ozil are continuing to coax him towards north London and it seems they are winning the battle.
Real Madrid would obviously prefer to generate some cash and are hoping that by refusing to play Khedira, he will be tempted to leave halfway through the season.
Khedira did come close to making the move to Arsenal in the summer, but it is believed the deal fell through after he insisted on the club matching his current £150,000-a-week wage. However, the German is now ready to relax his demands if it means sealing a move to the Emirates.
As Arsenal have around £20 million to spend in January and also require a centre-back, Wenger will have to negotiate a small fee for Khedira. Real Madrid reportedly want £10 million for him but there could be some room to drive down that price.
Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, who could be available for around £8 million.
