Southampton welcome Gus Poyet’s Sunderland to St Mary’s this Saturday in a game that shouldn’t disappoint.
Ronald Koeman's men will be looking to bounce back after suffering a narrow defeat to old boss Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham. The Black Cats will be hoping to earn their stripes once again after comfortably dismissing Stoke, a game which saw the north-east club pick up their first three points and striker Steven Fletcher getting back amongst the goals.
Awards for Sunderland duo
The Saints currently sit in third place in the Premier League table, with Sunderland in 13th position. The team from Wearside will have to keep inform striker Graziano Pelle quiet if they are to leave Southampton with a share off the spoils.
The Italian netted the only goal of the game in Italy’s midweek win over Malta and also picked up the Barclays Premier League Player of the Month award for September. Manager, Koeman, scooped up the Manager of the Month in what was a very successful month for the south-coast club.
Sunderland team news
Sunderland have only lost once this season, a narrow defeat when they visited Loftus Road back in August. Defender Billy Jones is out of contention this weekend after picking up an injury in a game played behind closed doors last week. Emanuele Giaccherini and Ricky Alvarez also remain sidelined. The positive news this week was that Captain John O'Shea committed his future to the club penning a deal that will see him play for the club until 2017.
Gus Poyet told Sky Sports News: "He's always there, he's always on time, he is always fit - or most of the time - he looks after himself, he represents the club well, the players. That's why he is the captain."
Sunderland clearly have harmony in the camp and are a tough side to beat as their results show however Southampton are a good team and they will edge this game.
