As Chelsea are led into a state of regret for releasing Frank Lampard, aged 36, one must look to the issue of veteran John Terry.
This season has been one of transition, masked undoubtedly by the success of the likes of Costa and Fabregas, two legends, Petr Cech and Frank Lampard have been seen out of the limelight at Chelsea.
Whilst Lampard, much to the distaste of Chelsea fans, has decided to ply his goal-scoring trade at Manchester City, Petr Cech has been been relegated to the bench as the young Thibaut Courtois takes stage.
There may have been an air of nervousness heading into this season without these two hugely experienced, battle hardened Chelsea elites. However, due to the impact of replacements in the form of Courtois and Fabregas, the impact has been alleviated somewhat.
What to do about Terry?
However, John Terry moving on is a worrying proposition. With the scarcity of centre backs being highlighted in the recent transfer window one has cause for concern with Chelsea's ability to replace such a legendary figure.
It could be said that Chelsea have already gained a replacement, in the form of Gary Cahill. The fellow Englishman has certainly shown a great deal of ability, confidence and maturity at the back but the trouble instead comes when thinking of recreating the partnership that Chelsea have had.
This has come in the form of Carvalho and Cahill being alongside Terry but now Chelsea must strike up a plan to form something that can replicate that defensive control and give them a platform for future success.
With David Luiz seen off to the French league in the summer and Kurt Zouma being brought in from the French, there is certainly a flow of options coming through Chelsea. With Ivanovic being rampant as a right full-back, Chelsea must either invest in current options or look to a rather stagnant transfer market.
Rumours of interest in the likes of Varane have sparked many to see the answer in the big money moves of the transfer market. With Zouma in Chelsea's ranks and many others in the vast portfolio of talent Chelsea holds one would speculate they could source such talent.
Whoever steps into the place of such a legend will have to really make big impressions, quickly.
