Liverpool might not be interested in securing a deal for ex-Barcelona star Victor Valdes, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be trying to land his compatriot Iker Casillas in the near future.
At least that’s the inference from rumours in Spain, specifically Catalan daily Mundo Deportivo, who claim that the Real Madrid goalkeeper’s current situation at the Santiago Bernabeu has left him ripe for the picking.
And, with Simon Mignolet being the only renowned shot-stopper at Anfield, it’s thought that Brendan Rodgers is keen to take advantage of Casillas’s position, by convincing him to finally make a switch to the Premier League.
Casillas at Madrid
Despite being a household name in the Spanish capital Casillas has struggled ever since he was dropped by Jose Mourinho in favour of Diego Lopez whilst The Special One was in charge.
The 33-year-old then battled in vain to get game-time, and if the now-Chelsea boss had stayed at the Bernabeu his playing days there might have been curtailed already.
It transpired though that the season in question was to be Mourinho’s last in La Liga, and he was quickly replaced by Carlo Ancelotti. Embedded in the Italian’s regime last term, Casillas played in cup competitions whilst Lopez remained the go-to-guy in domestic fixtures.
That setup allowed the Spain international, who's current contract sees him earn around £135k-a-week, to clinch his second Champions League title, and assured his place at this summer’s World Cup.
Since the tournament in Brazil though Casillas has floundered, and he currently looks well short of his brilliant best. As such there have been numerous calls to replace him, and Ancelotti would be wise to heed them before too long.
In this respect Madrid’s loss looks set to be Liverpool’s gain, with Mundo claiming that the Merseyside club have already contacted the Spaniard in order to gauge the possibility of a transfer.
With Rodgers confirming that the Reds are no longer in the running to sign the aforementioned Valdes a change of tact makes sense, and Casillas has the years left in him to prove that he’s not done and dusted just yet.
If the veteran ‘keeper is to leave Madrid then Ancelotti is likely to already be casting his eye over replacements. Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic is the latest to be linked with a Bernabeu transfer, whilst Los Blancos are still retaining an interest in Thibaut Courtois.
Their rumoured pursuit of David de Gea is reportedly on the rocks however, given the fact that United are preparing to offer him a lucrative new deal to tie down his future for years to come.
