Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was given a huge seven-year contract worth in the region of $126 million earlier in the year.
Since that news, people have debated whether or not his play on the field has warranted such a lucrative salary. And now, Bears legend Brian Urlacher has come out and slammed Cutler, saying that he just isn't at a level right now that deserves such a wage.
There is one area that Urlacher believes Cutler is elite in, his bank account. But as far as earning it on the field with his play, well, the former Bears linebacker doesn’t agree with that one bit.
“Financially, he is one of the elite guys in the NFL … he just hasn’t produced like an elite quarterback,” the former linebacker said on 87.7 FM The Game. “You look at the Bradys, the Mannings, the Rodgers, the Brees, those guys win every year, even with no one around them."
Cutler Lagging Behind
“Rodgers has no offensive line. He wins. Brady has no receivers. He wins.
“And you look at Jay. He’s got Brandon (Marshall), Alshon (Jeffery), Matt (Forte), this great offensive line, Martellus Bennett, and they can’t seem to put it together, for some reason. I’m not sure if that’s his fault, but for some reason they just can’t figure it out.”
The Bears are 3-4 this season and Cutler has thrown for 1,866 yards and 14 touchdowns. However, he can’t shake the turnover issues that have plagued him throughout his career, as he’s tossed seven interceptions through seven games.
As Urlacher eluded to, there isn't something quite right now in Chicago and it isn't particularly obvious as to what would solve their woes. But one thing is for sure, if they don't get their act together then head coach Marc Trestman will be on a very hot seat.
