Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has hinted that the club could complete a deal for Spanish goalkeeper Victor Valdes, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The Red Devils announced yesterday that the 32-year-old would be training with the club as he goes in search of finding his fitness after picking up an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March.
Valdes ultimately left Spanish giants Barcelona in the summer after his contract expired, and now it appears that he could star in the Premier League for the first time in his career.
When asked about the possibility of Valdes being handed a contract at the Theatre of Dreams, Red Devils boss Van Gaal said:
"Manchester United has always their eyes open."
- Victor Valdes passes Manchester United medical
- Victor Valdes to train with Manchester United
- Liverpool in talks with Victor Valdes
It appears, then, that the experienced Spaniard could challenge current United No.1 David de Gea for a place in the Red Devils' starting XI over the coming months. De Gea is certainly well ahead in the pecking order at Old Trafford right now, having proved his credentials for the club on a consistent basis over the course of the last year or so.
If United do complete a deal for Valdes, then it will certainly come as a major blow to Liverpool who have been credited with interest in the shot-stopper of late. Simon Mignolet - who is Brendan Rodgers' current No.1 at Anfield - has struggled for form so far this season, so it's not surprising that the club have been linked with Valdes' signature.
However, with United now seemingly in control of the Valdes situation, it remains to be seen as to whether Rodgers will make a move for the 32-year-old anytime soon.
De Gea and Manchester United, meanwhile, will be targeting a clean sheet and all three points this weekend as they play host to Premier League table-toppers Chelsea at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are already 10 points behind Jose Mourinho's side, so can't afford to drop points against their rivals on Sunday. Valdes will certainly be an interested spectator this weekend, but it remains to be seen as to whether he will ever don the red shirt of Manchester United.
