Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed he wants to keep on-loan Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand on a permanent deal.

The English full-back was deemed surplus to requirements by Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge this season and was one of the first signings made by Koeman at Southampton.

Bertrand has wasted no time in taking advantage of the run of games he is now getting on the South coast. His performances have been everything Koeman could have wanted from Luke Shaw's replacement and have already done enough to make the Dutch manager want him on a permanent basis.

Permanent deal a possibility

Koeman confirmed his interest in Bertrand when questioned by the Southern Daily Echo if he was interested in tying the left-back down, although he did agree that it may be a little too early to be discussing the possibilities.

“Maybe it’s too early to talk about that, but I am very happy until now with the performance of Ryan"

“If we have the money, yes,” Koeman told reporters.

England full-backs

With Nathaniel Clyne down the right, and Bertrand on the left, Koeman has found himself to have two of the top English full-backs at his disposal this season.

Clyne was recently called into Roy Hodgson's England squad for the first time, and if his form continues, it would be no shock to see Bertrand's name added next to his teammate.

Both provide Southampton with a pace and energy that is essential in the modern game, especially with so much emphasis put on them to join the attack on a regular basis.

Superb defensive record

Although the Saints have drawn plaudits for their fluid attacking football this season, it has not gone unnoticed that they have the tightest defence in the top four English leagues.

Clyne and Bertrand are both included in that solid back line and with such pace to keep them out of trouble, as well as the ability on the ball that both possess, it is easy to see why Koeman would want the loanee on a long-term deal.

If Koeman gets his way then Southampton will have another exciting young prospect on their books. With the Saints making such a high-flying start to the season, it would also be the perfect move for Bertrand is his blossoming career as well.
