Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has criticised the way Liverpool went about dealing with the Patrice Evra situation after the Uruguayan was found guilty of racism back in 2011.

It was in a heated Premier League contest with Manchester United at Anfield where Suarez allegedly used a racist term towards the United full-back.

The ex-Liverpool man was then banned for eight matches following the verdict and was fined £40,000 by the Football Association following the incident.

But the 27-year-old still reiterates he is not a racist and says the way his former club handled the affair all but exacerbated the problem.

"Am I a racist? No, absolutely not."

From his autobiography 'Crossing The Line', Suarez wrote: "Did I use the Spanish word 'negro' in an argument that took place in Spanish with Patrice Evra? Yes.

THE MISINTERPRETATION

According to Suarez, he was first made aware of the accusation when Damien Comolli (Liverpool's director of football at the time) approached him after the game and mentioned the away side had complained to officials about racism.

"I told Comolli what had happened. He then told Kenny Dalglish (then-Liverpool manager) and they both told the referee and it was that version that went to the hearing" claims Suarez.

"Why did I not go to the referee myself? Because nobody told me to and because I did not speak good English."

HANDSHAKE CONTROVERSY

Suarez then got himself into more bother with Evra in his first start following his suspension, when he appeared to have refused a handshake from the French left-back as they were lining up.

"As I was walking down the line, Evra was shaking everybody's hand, but he lowered his hand when he reached mine" the Uruguayan insisted.

"Once I had passed him he started with the show of grabbing my arm and protested that I hadn't shaken his hand.

"If it was a trap, I fell into it."
