Newcastle United striker Ayoze Perez has said that the main reason he opted to join the club was due to their appreciation of his talent and eagerness to sign him.

The striker scored the headed winner against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday during his first start, which was his first goal for the club since signing from Tenerife for £1.5 million during the summer break.

The young forward scored 16 goals in 34 appearances in the second tier of Spanish football last season, which attracted the interest of both Real Madrid and Barcelona according to The Guardian, both of whom he turned down in order to play in the Premier League.

Spanish giants were interested

Perez' fine performances leading the line for Tenerife last season ensured that a number of top clubs were interested in recruiting his services, however the way in which Newcastle went about signing him was what won him over.

“Yes, there was interest from those clubs [Barcelona and Real Madrid]. The truth is that the Newcastle bid was quite surprising because firstly there were other teams interested," he said, according to The Guardian.

Striker issue

Going into the game against Tottenham on Sunday it seemed as though Newcastle were struggling with striking options due to the injury to Papiss Cisse, who has recently rekindled some of his old, but memorable, goal-scoring form.

Perez came in and played well in the absence of the Senegal man and ultimately scored the deciding goal. If Perez is to make a big impact with the Toon Army, he will have to continually help Cisse in the goal-scoring department

Loic Remy was The Magpies top scorer last time round scoring 12 goals, however due to his departure, Newcastle need their new front line to take on the duty.
