Manchester United failed to complete a big money move for Arturo Vidal over the summer because of the Chilean's knee injury, according to Juventus CEO Giuseppe Marotta.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with the midfielder over the summer, and were reportedly close to sealing a deal for him. Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was keen on adding reinforcements in midfield and it seemed as though Vidal was the man for the job - however the saga dragged on and eventually fell through.
It had been that the 27-year-old's history of knee problems was behind the deal failing - he failed to complete 90 minutes at the World Cup having undergone surgery beforehand, while he's been subbed off in four of his eight league appearances this term.
Juventus were also keen on keeping Vidal, but Marotta says that his fitness was the main reason that he's not a Manchester United player. "The injury influenced his [potential] departure, even now he doesn't have the best physical condition," Marotta is quoted as saying by TalkSPORT.
"For our part, however, there is the clear desire to keep him because we renewed his contract."

The news will come as a source of frustration for Manchester United fans who were desperate to see the Vidal done before the close of the transfer window. Instead of landing the Chilean dynamo, Van Gaal snapped up Daley Blind on deadline day, and so far the Dutchman has struggled to make an impact. Ander Herrera signed on the dotted line earlier on the summer window but the jury is still out.
As it stands the Red Devils currently sit in 10th in the Premier League with 13 points from 10 games so far having not won a game since the 2-1 victory over Everton at Old Trafford last month.
Van Gaal has been criticised for failing to add a top quality central defender over the summer - something that came back to haunt him during the 1-0 derby defeat against Manchester City. However reports yesterday suggested that the former Bayern Munich boss won't add to his squad because his preferred targets are not available.
