Manchester United fans thought the club had confirmed a deal to bring Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal to the club, reports The Metro.
It's been suggested that United fans misread a headline on the club's official site as: 'Vidal signs for van Gaal's Reds'. Ultimately, though, that wasn't the case and the headline actually read: 'Vital signs for van Gaal's Reds'.
It appears, then, that a few Manchester United fans got a little overexcited by the possibility of their club landing the £40 million rated Serie A star.
United, of course, were linked with a move for the central-midfielder all summer long, but failed to bring him to the Theatre of Dreams. However, despite negotiations seemingly having taken place, it's recently been revealed that United pulled out of the deal because of the player's injury record.
Instead of landing Vidal in the last transfer window, United secured the services of midfield duo Ander Herrera and Daley Blind. Despite as many as six new signings at Old Trafford, the Red Devils have struggled to find their best form under the Louis van Gaal regime.

In fact, United already look out of the title race, and are already playing catch up as they attempt to secure their place in next year's Champions League competition. Perhaps, then, officials of the club should have taken a risk on the Juventus star in the summer.
Next up for United
Manchester United's immediate attention, meanwhile, will turn to this weekend's Premier League clash with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. The Old Trafford outfit will be desperate to secure all three points on Saturday as they look to bounce back from their derby defeat against Manchester City.
Vidal certainly won't be in attendance on Saturday, but United fans will be hoping to see Michael Carrick take to the Old Trafford pitch for the first time this season. The former Tottenham star could, however, fill in at centre-back after impressing at the Etihad.
