Cleveland Cavaliers duo Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving took some heat yesterday after an image of the duo's unique celebration during their Monday night win over the New Orleans Pelicans went viral.
The celebration, a still image of which can be seen above, saw, in some people's eyes at least, the two NBA superstars smoke an imaginary marijuana cigarette at the end of a special handshake. The reaction that followed said celebration was a mixture of ridicule and condemnation with many coming down hard on the two high-profile athletes for seemingly promoting drugs.
But the Cavaliers have today moved to reject such claims, instead offering a different explanation behind the celebration that would certainly fit this time of year.
As reported by the Associated Press, Cleveland sent out an email insisting that Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving were simply sharpening their mustaches:
"(Both players are) quickly sharpening the end of an imaginary mustache at the end of their exchange with each other. It has nothing to do with smoking a joint," read the message.
- Cavaliers superstar already considering leaving team for Lakers
- Kobe Bryant breaks unwanted NBA record
- Cavaliers star ruled out for at least 12 games
Whether you believe the NBA franchise or not, the mustache excuse does have milage.
With the month of November playing host to 'Movember' - a charity led initiative that sees men grow their facial hair to promote awareness of a number of men's health issues - the new explanation is certainly plausible - much to the annoyance of photoshop experts the world over.
Reason to celebrate?
While Love and Irving were happy to toast a win over the New Orleans Pelicans this week the opportunities for the Cavs to celebrate have not come quite as regularly as many expected before the season got underway.
Losing three of their opening four teams the feel good factor brought by the additions of LeBron James and Love had begun to wain. Two wins in a row though has at least seen them improve to a 3-3 record prior to Saturday night's upcoming game against the Boston Celtics.
If they register a win there too it wil be interesting to see how Love and Irving choose to commemorate it.
