Heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko has achieved something which for years he has been unable to do. On Saturday night he put on a highly entertaining show for fans across the world.
Often Klitschko is described with terms such as mechanical, methodical, effective and even cowardly. These all are meant in a negative manner but words such as thrilling, powerful and refreshing are more accurate for his latest performance.
The 38-year-old faced off win the previously undefeated Kubrat Pulev in Hamburg, Germany, in a contest which many believed would be Klitschko's most legitimate test in years.
Pulev posed a genuine threat
Puelv stands at 6ft 4 is almost as tall as Klitschko, but weighed in slightly heavier than the Ukrainian Champion. This suggested that Klitschko would be unable to push and lean down on Pulev as he has done many of his smaller opponents in that past few years.
Klitschko receives a huge amount of criticism for his defensive style of boxing in which not getting hit and keeping his opponent at range on the end of his ramrod jab is the priority. This has lead to calls that he is boring and not a true great of the heavyweight division.
- Khan can't afford loss against Alexander
- Klitschko to continue dominance against Pulev
- Kovalev domiantes Hopkins
Klitschko finds some aggression
Klitschko looked to force the pace of the fight from the very start with both him and Pulev looking to land early. Pulev is noted as having a good jab and he landed it early, snapping Klitschko's head back.
Klitschko then went on the offensive, flooring the game Bulgarian twice in the first round and looked as though he was going to finish the job very early on. Pulev showed his toughness and powers of recovery by carrying on and continuing to fight away.
Finally an entertaining fight
This made for a fight in which the action was intriguing to see. Klitschko fought in a fashion which we haven't seeing a long time. He was aggressive and took a few shots in order to land his own much more effective ones.
The fight came to its natural conclusion in the fifth round when Klitschko left in landing a big left hook. Pulev was sent falling back across the ring landing heavily on the canvas.
There aren't many out there who would have been able to get back up and fight on and the shot landed flush with full power. It was a sickening shot and left Pulev completely dazed.
More Ruthless Klitschko bodes well
In his first fight back on American broadcaster HBO Klitschko seemed to have a new enthusiasm to be more ruthless in the ring. He has always been highly effective and dissected opponents but this time out he looked to end the fight early.
It was just the type of fight that boxing fans have been crying out for from the heavyweights dominant man. It was refreshing to see him go on the attack from the start and look to inflict real damage with bad intentions.
Klitschko has once more proved his dominance and there really appears to be no one out there who looks capable of beating him in the near future.
