2. Kevin Strootman
Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman only made his comeback from a career-threatening cruciate ligament injury with an eight-minute cameo against Torino less than two weeks ago, after eight painful months on the sidelines.
Strootman is likely a player that Van Gaal would have targeted in the summer if fully fit, with the 24-year-old robbed both of the chance to join United and star for the Netherlands at the World Cup through injury.
Van Gaal has a strong relationship with Strootman and there's no question his recovery will be monitored closely by United scouts, but any January transfer offer talk is premature and more importantly well wide of the mark.
Roma are chasing their first Serie A title since 2001 and Strootman's return to anything like top form would give them a massive lift in that pursuit, which is exactly why United know the Dutch playmaker won't be available until next summer at the earliest.
