4. Ron Vlaar
You can understand why Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar continues to be linked with a cut-price January move to Manchester United, but any offer would smack of the kind of short-termism Woodward is keen to stress will be avoided at all costs.
Vlaar is out of contract at the end of the season and was of course an absolute tower of strength for Van Gaal and the Netherlands at the World Cup, which when added to United's defensive woes so far this season makes a move to Old Trafford look perfectly viable.
The imposing centre-back will turn 30 before the season finishes though, not exactly the kind of long-term solution United are searching for in their biggest problem position.
Van Gaal has already shown this season that youth will get a chance, the experienced tactician would surely not stunt the growth of impressive academy graduates to put Vlaar in the first team for an absolute maximum of two seasons, would he?
