Nemanja Matic has revealed that Chelsea coaches have told him to analyse Eden Hazard's game so he can practice on doing everything the Belgian doesn't do.
Hazard has been the star of this Chelsea team since arriving from Lille in a £32 million deal in 2012. His contribution to the Blues was recognised last season when he was awarded the PFA Young Player of the Year award as well as Chelsea's in-house player of the season award.
However, Jose Mourinho is keen to make sure everyone in his squad knows their role. With that in mind, Matic, who cuts out a living for himself as an unglamourous anchorman, has been told to do exactly the opposite to his tricky team-mate.
Upon arriving at Chelsea, completing a £21 million deal from Benfica in January, Matic was told that he would do well to steer clear of Hazard's style.
In a recent interview, rehashed by the Daily Star, Matic was asked what the best piece advice he's been given. Hazard took it upon himself to answer the question, saying: "Watch Hazard videos on YouTube!"
Don't follow the leader
But the 26-year-old said: "No, they told me to do everything not like Eden Hazard does!"
"I don’t remember one specific piece of advice. With every coach you learn something special.
"When I was five I knew I was going to play football, it was my life and every day I just played football.
"I finished school and then I played, and during the night I was playing. I never thought I would do something else."
the next hazard
Ironically, Matic revealed that he played in a very similar role as Hazard in his early years.
He added: "When I was young I played for Vrelo, a small club in Serbia. I started at the age of five years old. My father was my first coach from five to nine then after that I moved.
"I was the number 10 - the maestro. My brother plays there now and he learned off me then – and he still does now!"
Mourinho will be more than happy with Matic's form, despite the fact his contribution to the Blues is less obvious than that of Hazard's. In fact Matic's form has inspired the Special One to award Matic a new contract, according to reports, in an attempt to ward off interest from Real Madrid.
