Ever since he made his debut at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view earlier this year, Rusev has emerged as one of the strongest heels in the business today. He still hasn’t been pinned in any match and his unbeaten run has resulted in The Bulgarian Brute becoming the United States Champion when he defeated Sheamus.
Every superstar that has stood opposite Rusev inside the ring has fallen victim to his vicious Accolade submission hold. Jack Swagger to The Big Show, Mark Henry and Sheamus have all tried to bring Rusev down but they’ve all failed and that raises the question as to who can actually take the United States Championship from Rusev?
The least popular option which remains a very high possibility is that Rusev could eventually fall to John Cena if he continues to move up the ladder as a massive threat to any superstar.
There are other options for Rusev and the gold. There was a much talked about option of Rusev and Lana dropping the United States Championship for storyline purposes and bringing in a type of ‘Russian Federation Heavyweight’ Championship. Whilst a unification bout with the Intercontinental Champion has been mooted for some months now but none of these options have come to fruition thus far, which suggests Rusev will continue to defend his United States Championship.
BAD NEWS BARRETT
We were finally treated to a Bad News Barrett promo this past Sunday at the Survivor Series pay-per-view and judging by the reaction of the fans it sounded like everyone enjoyed it. He delivered his promo as a face which could suggest he will return as a face, even if he doesn’t the fans will still react positively to him. But Barrett is a brawler and his in-ring style will work well with Rusev.

- WWE: Rusev could clash with John Cena at Night of Champions
The fact that the fans love Barrett, it will make them hate Rusev and Lana that much more and that is key in his development as a top heel in the business. If Barrett can return and look like a genuine threat to Rusev then we could be in for great entertainment as Lana and Barrett clash verbally, whilst Rusev dishes out the potential punishment physically.
Unfortunately for Sheamus he was taken out of the Survivor Series main event match so it looks unlikely that he will return in a top-level feud with somebody from Team Authority but his loss was Erick Rowan’s gain. Now when Sheamus retains he should have his eyes set on the championship he lost and have another attempt at bringing down Rusev.
If it does happen then it won’t help Sheamus in any way as the likelihood is that he will fall to Rusev once again, but picking up another important victory against a former WWE Champion would be a fantastic achievement for Rusev.
The Big Guy has made a huge impact since coming back from injury and he is almost at the stage he was at in 2012 and it’s great to see the WWE use Ryback in the correct way. Ryback was a focal point in the Survivor Series main event build up as he was a highly sought after talent but unfortunately he failed to make a huge impact. Ryback is now set to take on Kane in a Chairs match at the TLC pay-per-view where it is expected that Ryback will remain victorious.
Ryback won’t be entering the WWE World Heavyweight Championship picture any time soon so it is the perfect time to actually make the United States Championship mean something again. The Human Wrecking Ball taking on The Bulgarian Brute would be a a feud the fans will be in to and Ryback will be the biggest threat yet for Rusev.
When Roman Reigns returns he will need to be in a big-name feud before entering the Royal Rumble and then potentially going on to headline WrestleMania which still isn’t a guarantee that it will actually happen. The jury is still out on Reigns, and a feud with Rusev would be very good for him at this stage because the last time the two faced off the fans were definitely into it.
One match gauged a lot of interest so a feud could do that and so much more, he has been improving on his acting skills so he should be a better talker on the microphone upon his return and Lana will really be able to push Reigns, whilst Rusev will also push Reigns inside the ring.
The only problem is that a loss could hurt both men, ending the unbeaten run for Rusev would make his unbeaten run pointless and would be underwhelming heading into WrestleMania, whilst Reigns would also need a big win heading into the Royal Rumble.
