Louis van Gaal has admitted that Anderson can not currently play for Manchester United because he is too unfit for the Premier League.

The Brazilian midfielder has been something of a misfit at Old Trafford in recent times and was expected to leave to club permanently after joining Fiorentina on loan in January. He eventually returned to the club in the summer but has started just one game this season; the 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in the Capital One Cup.

While his absence has been down to injury, there were concerns that Anderson had gained too much weight in his time away from Old Trafford. It was rumoured that Van Gaal was so miffed with the club would cancel the 26-year-old's contract and release him.

"Fitness is the most important thing. First you have to show your fitness. Not for just one day but for several weeks."

Set for exit

It is now believed that they will try to offload him for a cut-price in the January transfer window, but for now, Anderson needs to focus on regaining his fitness. Van Gaal admits that, in that respect, he is a long way away from the first team.

"Anderson is now coming back. He was injured but he's training now with the team" says the Dutchman told the Sunday People.

Unfit

"I cannot say what had happened last year or the years before that but in four months I have been here he's had a lot of injuries. So I cannot judge him but when he trains he trains at a good level. He's not always fit - and that is more his problem now.

"I wouldn't pick him yet because you have to be fit. Being fit to play is the smallest thing you can demand as a trainer.

"You have to have professional league fitness. You have to be fit. That's why players have to play in the second team, even players like Falcao, in spite of his name.

"Fitness is the most important thing. First you have to show your fitness. Not for just one day but for several weeks."

Anderson eventually cost Manchester United £26 million after Sir Alex Ferguson pulled out all the stops to sign him from Porto in 2007. Along with Nani, Anderson was expected to reach world-class status but has failed to do so under the stewardship of Manchester United.
