Alexis Sanchez has been by far and away Arsenal’s most impressive performer this season and the £35million summer signing from Barcelona is proving to be something of a saviour - that is until the last week or so.
During Manchester United’s smash and grab 2-1 win at Emirates Stadium just over a week ago, which angered Gunners fans greatly, Sanchez did not look as energetic has he has done for much of this season.
Premier League fans were baffled as to why the 25-year-old was not making the most of a particularly makeshift defence Louis van Gaal was forced to field in the match. He had been causing pretty much every other defence in the league all kinds of mischief.
One explanation was put forward after the game, when claims appeared in the Chilean press that their national team’s talisman was not himself because he was tired…from having too much sex. Apparently he and partner Laia Grassi are so enamoured with one another that they can’t keep their hands off.
It was quite the bombshell among the Arsenal online community, not least because it meant much attention was focused on Grassi, who, it is safe to say, is a rather good looking woman.
Alexis Sanchez is not the first professional footballer to draw headlines for reasons connected with coitus; it is a subject that pops up every now and again, usually when a World Cup or European Championship comes around due to players down time at the competitions and what they are doing with it.
In fact, research suggests that sex the night before a match should have little physical effect on an athlete’s performance, but, as we know, physical fitness is only a part of a successful performance.
