Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is looking to significantly strengthen his defensive department at Old Trafford in January, so much so that he's currently monitoring six different players that have been identified for potential transfers at the turn of the year.
According to the Daily Mail, the Dutch coach has delivered an extensive list of prospective targets to Red Devils executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, and ordered scouts to keep tabs on all of them between now and the forthcoming window to help him make an informed decision in 2015.
Injuries to several of Manchester United's key players at various points of the 2014/15 campaign has prevented Van Gaal from naming a settled back four, and has been partly responsible for the club's disappointing start to the season.
However, after three consecutive Premier League victories the Red Devils are back in the top four and looking to cement their place in the Champions League qualification spots with another three points against Stoke City at the Theatre of Dreams on Tuesday evening.
Van Gaal is eager to maintain recent momentum, and is conscious that Manchester United cannot afford another blip, increasing the importance of bringing in additional defensive cover when the transfer window reopens on January 1.
