David de Gea was hailed on Twitter following his heroic performance for Manchester United in the Red Devils' 2-1 win over Stoke City on Tuesday night.

The Spanish goalkeeper helped United secure all three points thanks to a wonderful save in the closing stages of the match - prompting a wave of humorous tweets from appreciative supporters.

One of the most popular tweets was this effort, posted by GeniusFootball, showing De Gea as Neo from the Matrix on account of his seemingly supernatural reactions.

This inspired effort showing De Gea mocked up as Jesus was posted on Instagram by former Manchester United coach Phil Neville. But not everyone was overly impressed, unsurprisingly, with the comparison between the Red Devils' keeper and the son of God.

Plenty of Manchester United fans took to Twitter after the final whistle to express their exasperation at the club's failure to tie De Gea down to a new long-term contract. But they weren't alone. Daily Mail football correspondent David McDonnell echoed the sentiments of just about every United fan with this tweet.

Juan Mata and David de Gea have a very special bromance - and the Spanish playmaker was one of the first to congratulate the team's goalkeeper after the final whistle. “Big keepers appear when they have to,” the former Chelsea star mused.
