Manchester United’s trip to Southampton on Monday night in the Premier League has taken on even greater importance after West Ham United’s 3-1 victory over Swansea City on Sunday afternoon.
An Andy Carroll double and a red card for Lukasz Fabianski made sure that Louis van Gaal’s side dropped outside of the top four and the Dutchman will be looking for his team get the win that will see them leapfrog the Saints and Hammers.
A win for Manchester United would take them to within four points of rivals Manchester City in second - not a bad position to be in after 15 games, especially with the spoor start they made to the season and many questioning whether they can actually get back into the Champions League.
Anyway, they have to actually win the match and Van Gaal has a number of big selection decisions to make for the clash with the side managed by his countryman, and one time enemy, Ronald Koeman.
The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager revealed this weekend that he has got the welcome boost of centre-back Jonny Evans becoming available again after injury. Defence has been the biggest issue for the Red Devils this season so the more actual defenders they have back, the better.

Ashley Young impressed at left-back in the victory over Stoke City in midweek, but playing him there against a far more accomplished side in the form of Southampton would appear to be an unnecessary risk.
Van Gaal also confirmed that Angel di Maris would miss the match, but that Wayne Rooney’s knee problems were nothing serious and he will be ready to lead the the team out at St Mary’s.
Meanwhile, Radamel Falcao will be pushing for a star over Robin van Persie, though the Dutchman is looking more like his old self recently and Van Gaal does not appear to be totally convinced of the Colombia international.
With all that in mind, here is the updated GMS predicted Manchester United XI for their Premier League meeting with Southampton on Monday night…
De Gea; Valencia, Evans, Smalling, Rojo; Carrick, Fellaini, Herrera, Mata; Rooney, Van Persie
