Rey Mysterio set to agree new deal with WWE in time for Royal Rumble

Published 1 Comments

Rey Mysterio could be set for a shock Royal Rumble return at the beginning of 2015. The former World Heavyweight Champion hasn't been seen on WWE TV since April but reports this weeks suggest he and Vince McMahon have come to new contract terms. His return to the ring must now surely be immanent.

Rumours of the Mexican's future have been doing the rounds for the past few months since fellow countryman Alberto Del Rio was sacked. It was then thought that Mysterio would be joining Del Rio in AAA's Lucha Underground but instead Vince McMahon has granted Rey some of his conditions and now the superstar looks set to sign a new contract when his current one expires next May.

Tough negotiations

It was reported a few months ago that Rey was backstage at Raw so he could have a face to face meeting with Vince McMahon to discuss his future because his contract had been automatically extended whilst he was out injured and he wanted it to be terminated so he could go and explore other avenues. This meeting never happened and Rey continued to refuse to cash in his pay cheques in the hope he could end his contract before May.

Change of heart

The news now is that some sort of breakthrough has been made and Vince has realised how big a pull Rey has on the Hispanic market, which has allowed him to offer the superstar some of the terms he required to sign a new contract.

As well as being back on WWE TV, the former Cruiserweight Champion will also be doing a lot of work for WWE outside of the ring in order to adhere to his new ambassador position.

It seems that even though Rey `Mysterio was happy to leave WWE and work elsewhere because of his differences with Vince, it came down to the fact that Rey has been part of the company for a very long time and he has made a lot of friends and he was happy with the new terms and not having to move to a new place and start over.

As for his return, it would seem the most likely route for WWE to take is for Rey to return in the match he won back in 2006, The Royal Rumble. He played a part in the 2014 rumble match when he came out at number 30 and was heavily booed when the crowd realised that him coming out meant Daniel Bryan wasn't playing a part in proceedings.

Hopefully if the former World Champion does return on January 23rd's event he will get a better reaction and hopefully push on for another Wrestlemania match.
