Alex Ferguson visit sealed Ryan Giggs deal for Manchester United

Published 1 Comments

Ryan Giggs has revealed that a personal visit from Alex Ferguson convinced him to sign a contract with Manchester United at the tender age of 13-years-old.

The Welshman went on to break a host of records at Old Trafford, playing 963 for the club and winning an unprecedented 13 Premier League titles. He now helps Louis van Gaal as assistant manager as his long association with the Red Devils stretches towards three decades.

But Giggs may never have donned the red shirt of Manchester United had it not been for a personal visit from Ferguson, who was still in the onset of building his dynasty at the club. Manchester United's talent scouts had alerted Ferguson to the talented teenager and he was impressed enough to go and offer him a contract in person.

Personal visit

“It was a big deal, probably more so for my mum.

Giggs, 41, is quoted in the Daily Star as saying: “I went home from school, still in my school uniform, and there was Sir Alex Ferguson at my house.

"It was a couple of cups of tea, few Digestives, then I signed the forms and I was like ‘Can I go back out and play football again, now?’

“It was a big deal, probably more so for my mum.

"Kids now have more access to what goes on but then, as a 13-year-old, the manager of Man United was a million miles away.

"I was level-headed about it – I never got above my station.”

Club Legend

Giggs would go on to be part of the famous Class of '92 at Manchester United, coming through with the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes and brothers Gary & Phil Neville. That group of players represented the core of an incredibly successful era at Old Trafford.

Potato Klaxon

Now Giggs is past his playing days, he's into using his skills to make viral videos. Oh, what's this? Why it is the perfect example of what I just said. It's the Welsh wonder himself doing keepy ups with a potato. With Manchester United winning five Premier League games on the bounce, maybe he's earned a little down time with some root vegetables.
