Liverpool have made an official move to sign Uruguayan striker James Baez, offering £3.2 million for the player dubbed ‘the new Suarez’.
According to the Daily Express, citing other reports, the Reds have made a decisive move to snap up the highly-rated South American prodigy before he can be snaffled by other European sides. Valencia are known to be among his admirers, and have been close to clinching a deal themselves.
Bid for the new Suarez
However it’s said that Liverpool will now rival them with a view to bolstering their attacking line, as Brendan Rodgers is keen to install confidence back into the Anfield ranks. The Northern Irishman’s side have struggled to replicate the form of last campaign, and following their most recent draw against relegation candidates Sunderland, questions are being asked over their credentials.
Though Baez is young and untested outside of his home continent he has notched five goals in his last 14 appearances, and his price-tag is hardly reflective of the potential he is judged to hold for the future.
The Atletico Juventud frontman has been likened to Kop hero Suarez, and Liverpool fans would certainly be ready to pay far more than £3 million or so if Baez can be half as good as the man who got them 31 league goals last year.
Issues with current crop
With Mario Balotelli thus far flattering to deceive in Liverpool colours, and Daniel Sturridge having been forced to spend large amounts of time on the sidelines through injury Rodgers knows he has to strengthen his ranks.
Rickie Lambert is the obvious interim option but he doesn’t promise the sort of goals needed to propel Liverpool up the table. In this respect Rodgers may be forced to take a gamble, and Baez could well turn out to be worth the risk.
