Juan Mata could be on the move to La Liga side Sevilla in January. This would only be one year into his five year contract at Old Trafford according to reports.
Juan Mata was signed by David Moyes last January for an extraordinary £37.1 million fee from Premier League rivals Chelsea. This signing was a big shock for one, Mata was named Chelsea’s player of the year the previous two years and secondly, the fact that Jose Mourinho let one of his best players go to arch rivals Manchester United was a surprise.
However, Jose Mourinho would not have let Mata go if he did not believe that Manchester United would not challenge his winning Chelsea side. Mata joined a side who were in all sorts of trouble and things did not improve as the season progressed but Mata put in some above average performances to keep the Old Trafford faithful happy.
Moyes seemed to have found a winning formula with Mata playing just behind the striker and Shinji Kagawa out wide left operating as more of an inside forward. However, David Moyes was indecisive with his players and rotated an extremely poor Manchester United side which led to his demise at Old Trafford.
Juan Mata has made limited appearances under new boss Louis Van Gaal and has possibly been outshone by some of the newer signings such as Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera. Mata has also struggled to hold down a place ahead of Wayne Rooney as Van Gaal tries to find his perfect formation and perfect XI.

Mata, however, has proved his capabilities as a Manchester United player and has since forced Louis Van Gaal to play him in a three-man midfield. With some wicked set pieces and killer passes into his fearful striking team mates, Mata has certainly contributed to Manchester United's 6 wins out of 6. Mata has also managed 11 goals in 26 games for the Red Devils; you literally cannot overlook Mata’s quality. What Mata lacks in pace he more than makes up for in technical ability which seems to have pleased Louis Van Gaal.
Sevilla will have obviously seen Mata’s ability first hand having played for Valencia in La Liga and they will obviously be keen to add a player with Mata’s credentials to their ranks. Manchester United are rumoured to be reluctant to let Mata go this window but open to offers if they get their targets in the summer window.
Letting Juan Mata go would be incredibly foolish because Mata is an incredible footballer and can create something out of nothing. Mata may not be starting as much as to be expected for the Red Devils but he is proving that it is a team game and strength in depth is vital. This is just speculation at the moment but Mata may take some convincing to leave Old Trafford as we saw with the passionate celebration against Liverpool.
