Manchester United are confident that they will be able to force through a deal for Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman in the January transfer window, reports ESPN.
In fact, it has been suggested that the Red Devils are set to land two players in the upcoming transfer window, with Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar also heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Strootman, though, appears to be the club's No.1 target as they go in search of improvement in the middle of the park. The Roma midfielder, who has just returned to the first-team setup following a cruciate knee ligament injury, was recognised as a key member of the Netherlands side under Louis van Gaal.
Injury ultimately cost the midfield ace of a place in this past summer's World Cup, but Van Gaal has clearly not forgotten the talent that he possesses.
And now, despite Roma insisting that the player isn't for sale, it appears that the club are ready to negotiate with United after preliminary discussions about a deal.
After the Serie A side were eliminated from the Champions League at the hands of Manchester City, it now seems that United could land their man in the next window, with the same report suggesting that the Old Trafford hierarchy will have to spend at least £30 million in order to secure the player's signature.
Strootman, though, may not be the only new name arriving at the Theatre of Dreams next month, with it being suggested that the club are set to add to their defensive ranks, too.
Vlaar, then, could be the man Van Gaal turns to as he looks to add experience to his back-line. The Red Devils boss certainly has faith in the Villa captain after he starred under him throughout this past summer's World Cup.
Despite his contract coming to an end at the end of the season, the same report has revealed that Villa will still demand as much as £12m for his services.
