WrestleMania may still be four months away but the WWE is already busy putting in place key storylines that will come to ahead at the Greatest Show on Earth.
They have though, it has been revealed today, had to pull the plug on one such storyline involving Rey Mysterio as the Mexican Superstar's absence from the WWE continues to drag on.
As reported by Wrestling Inc., the WWE had been planning on running a return storyline involving Mysterio which would have begun at Survivor Series before coming to ahead at WrestleMania 31. A plot they still had hopes for until this week.
Now though, with Mysterio continuing to hold out on a return, and Survivor Series now just a memory, the WWE creative team have finally called off the plot having failed to rework it in recent weeks. That of course means, at present, no big send off for the fans' favorite next April.
Mysterious Mysterio absence
Mysterio hasn't been seen in the WWE since the Raw show following WrestleMania 30. At first injury meant an extended spell on the sidelines, but this has made way for contractual disputes and Mysterio's own apparent desire to quit the WWE altogether.
The WWE though feel that Mysterio, whose contract is near expired, owes them a number of back-logged appearances and are therefore keen on brokering a deal which sees his return.

WWE's pulled WM31 storyline certainly seems to suggest that the two sides are no closer to agreeing on any potential return date however.
Had the wrestler been expected to announce an official comeback in the near future it would have made sense for the creative team to continue work on a "return storyline" based around WrestleMania, what with still having four months to play with.
The WWE may not be prepared to risk a whole segment of the biggest show of the year on an unreliable Rey Mysterio but there is still hope he will be back for a lesser role.
Rumors persist that the Mexican Superstar will eventually return to WWE TV if only to see out his current contract.
