Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed just what he told Alexis Sanchez during transfer talks over a £35 million summer move, pressing him his belief that his commitment to attacking football suits the Chilean maestro perfectly.
Sanchez decided to leave Barcelona to try his luck in the Premier League, a switch that has given the 26-year-old a platform to be the crown jewel in an Arsenal side with potential that belies their seriously indifferent start to the season.
There were no shortage of suitors for Sanchez's signature when it emerged Barca were willing to sell, with Liverpool in particular desperate to sign one of the World Cup's star men as a replacement for Luis Suarez. Sanchez picked Arsenal though, a decision which proves Wenger still has pulling power in the transfer market.
Birthday boy gets high praise from Wenger
Ahead of this weekend's Premier League showdown with Liverpool the Gunners boss was asked about the Sanchez signing and his impact on Arsenal since that transfer coup, insisting that the lure of joining a club that consistently delivers football worked in Arsenal's favour.
Wenger said: "I told him the way we play football will suit him and all players want to play in the Champions League."
Will Sanchez be the star man on Sunday?
Wenger will hope that Sanchez can remind Reds boss Brendan Rodgers just why he was so desperate to sign him this weekend, with Arsenal attempting to exorcise their Anfield demons on Sunday against a struggling Liverpool side.
Liverpool are stuck in 11th place in the Premier League table, five points behind the Gunners thanks to a poor run of form which has seen them win just two of their last 11 games in all competitions.
Arsenal's form has also been patchy to say the least, but in a Sanchez they have a genuine match-winner with 14 goals already under his belt this season.
With an injury-ravaged squad leaving options limited Wenger will be counting on the birthday boy to step up once again on Merseyside, ahead of a hectic run of festive fixtures which will push Arsenal's new superstar to the limit.
