Manchester United look set to welcome Luke Shaw back into the starting lineup against Newcastle United on Boxing Day.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the former-Southampton star will return for Manchester United's match against Alan Pardew's side at Old Trafford. Shaw has missed more than four weeks with an ankle injury.
The teenager has been plagued by injury since completing his £27m move from Southampton to United, after his preseason was interrupted by concerns over his fitness and a niggling hamstring problem.
He suffered ankle ligament damage against Arsenal in the victory at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season, and has not featured for Van Gaal since.
In his absence, midfielder Ashley Young has filled in well at left-back, providing an assist for Radamel Falcao at Villa Park during Manchester United's 1-1 draw.
As reported, Shaw has been back in training over the last week and is in contention to come back into the team barring any setbacks between now and Friday.
It's more good news for United as Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera should also be fully recovered and ready to play a role against Newcastle after a 'small muscular injury'.
An update on his official Facebook page on Saturday said: "I can't be with the team today due to a little injury, but I will be ready again soon. Cheers to everyone!"
Marouane Fellaini and Marcos Rojo should also be back for one of the two games over the Christmas break before the end of December while Herrera is likely to step in place for Darren Fletcher, who struggled through 45 minutes against Villa.
United take on Newcastle on Friday before facing Tottenham at White Hart Lane for an early afternoon fixture on Sunday. On New Year's Day, United stay on their travels with a trip to Stoke City before heading down to Yeovil Town in the FA Cup.
