Louis van Gaal has had Dutchman Kevin Strootman on his radar for many months and a £32 million deal for the midfielder looks set to go through in January, reports the Daily Express.
Italian agent Matteo Materazzi confirmed on Tuesday that he is more than confident that a move to Old Trafford will go through in the winter transfer window.
According to the Italian media, Materazzi revealed: "Manchester are one step away from Kevin Strootman." The 24-year-old hasn't been back in action for very long at all after a knee injury sparked an absence from the summer World Cup in Brazil.
But his return has been welcomed thoroughly by Roma fans as he is regarded as one of their best players due to his positional awareness across the middle of the field.
And due to his professional accolades, it will cost his fellow countryman Louis van Gaal a hefty £32 million so as to build upon his midfield at Old Trafford which currently accommodates the likes of Juan Mata and Ander Herrera; two very hot aspects of the Red Devils' season this campaign.
It looks as though the Dutch boss is more than willing to splash the cash during January also after being tipped to sign Mats Hummels for £45 million and hand over £20 million to Juventus for the services of Stephan Lichtsteiner, not to mention a possible swoop for Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar.
Bringing Stootman to Old Trafford would simulate the period when Roy Keane roamed the midfield as the Dutchman is well known for his tough tackling and box-to-box style of play.
If Materazzi is right in his prediction, along with the signings of Lichtsteiner, Hummels and Vlaar, United could have unscathed the key to a thrilling title charge in the second half of the season.
